The Reggio Emilia Apennines are an ideal destination for those traveling with their dogs, thanks to wide open spaces, unspoiled nature and uncrowded trails.

This two-day itinerary traverses the mid-Apennines among scenic villages and outdoor trails, offering experiences suitable for four-legged friends.

Between walks, nature stops and iconic sites such as the Pietra di Bismantova, the trip allows for a relaxed and shared experience of the area, not to mention great local food!

  • Routes suitable for everyone with a choice of short or more challenging itineraries.
  • It is good to inquire before leaving because in some places animals are welcome but on a leash.

  • Ideal in spring, summer and early fall.
  • If you extend your stay, you can also consider walking a section of the Via Matildica del Volto Santo, anancient pilgrimage route.

  • First stop - Toano, between history and nature Toano

    The first stop on this itinerary is in Toano. Arriving here you can admire the Emilian Apennine mountain range as the town stands in a panoramic position overlooking the Dolo valley. 
    After leaving your car near the sports field, or even the municipal swimming pool, you can take a walk through the village.

    Admire the view of the Dolo Valley
    Visit Santa Maria Parish Church along Via Matilde di Canossa, the best preserved in the area from an architectural point of view, with archaeological excavations revealing the presence of a medieval castle.

    To know
    The parish church is open by reservation and can be reached with a very short walk after parking in the square.

    This relaxed first stop, it’s perfect to settle in and enjoy the first views together with your dog: from here the landscape in each season gives a different view with its colors.

  • Second stop - Quara - from the canyon to the Big Bench Toano

    From Toano, you move towards Quara, a breathtaking location surrounded by the Apennine nature and a place to explore the trail network.

    To do

    • Visit the Big Bench in Quara, one of the many Giant Benches in the Reggio Emilia area, with a breathtaking view. 
    • Visit the historical and geological site of Balze del Malpasso, with Tibetan bridges suspended over a canyon carved by the waters, not far from the remains of ancient Roman baths

     Curiosity 

    Immersed in Apennine nature, Quara was founded by the ancient Romans, who had found thermal springs here, near the course of the Dolo stream, the ancient name was “Aquaria”. 

     

    Between trails and viewpoints, this second stop offers a variety of possibilities, from simple walks to more challenging hikes.

  • Third stop - Pietra of Bismantova Castelnovo né Monti

    A symbol of the Reggio Emilia Apennines, the Pietra of Bismantova dominates the landscape with its imposing rock face and is an unmissable stop

    From the centre of Castelnovo ne' Monti, take the SP 108 and then continue along the SP 26 which leads to Dante Alighieri square, below the Pietra and 4 km from the centre. 

    A must-see destination for those who have never visited this area, but also a regular stop for those who love it.

    To do

    • circular hike that, after circling the rock, climbs to the summit, from which you can enjoy an unforgettable view (approximately 3 hours)
    • shorter walks in the surrounding area see a loto of CAI trails
    • short path (half an hour) with climb to the top, for those who don't have much time available
    • visit to the Hermitage of the Virgin of Pietra and the Laudato si’ Center, which are located right at the foot of the rock. 

    There are two restaurants right here where you can sample traditional dishes, it's worth taking advantage of them before returning home. With numerous outdoor tables, they offer more comfort to those traveling with their four-legged friends, in addition to a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

    An iconic place to experience slowly, choosing routes that are also suitable for those traveling with animals.

    Dante Alighieri enthusiasts should remember that the Bismantova Stone is also mentioned in Purgatory
