Julian Rosefeldt Manifesto is a series of 13 video installations by the German artist, exhibited for the first time in Melbourne at the ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) and now on display at XNL Piacenza from September 18 to November 25, 2025.
The protagonist of all the channels, except for the prologue, is Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, who gives voice to the artistic manifestos of the 20th century in 13 different short films, playing as many characters, mostly female.
The work is based on extensive historical research on the locations and on the more than 50 texts that inspired those recited in the works.
The manifestos considered belong to movements in the visual arts, dance, architecture, literature, and cinema, with a prologue that begins with a quote from Marx and Engels.
The refined and polished imagery features frequent use of aerial shots, which are the artist's stylistic signature.
Julian Rosefeldt, born in Munich and based in Berlin, is sensitive to social issues and has conceived a work that aims to be a call to action, an incentive to have faith in the possibility of changing the world.
