The first weekend of November in Monticelli d'Ongina is the autumn festival dedicated to traditions: San Martino di Monticelli.
The day dedicated to San Martino falls on 11 November. In the past, this date marked the start of many activities, such as that of the schools and the courts. It was also the period marked by the slaughter of pigs, in some areas children received gifts, it was also the time when new wine was tapped. It was a period characterised by a festive atmosphere of abundance even for country people.
Those who lived on farmsteads in November often moved and changed their homes and ‘master’. The custom was so deep-rooted that even today people say ‘far San Martino’ to mean moving house.
In Monticelli, certain customs, jobs, games, such as the cuccagna game, are re-enacted, and gastronomic traditions and local products are celebrated on these feast days.
