Every year Castelvetro Piacentino on the first weekend of September celebrates its prince vegetable: the Shallot(scalogno).
The "Allium Ascalonicum," or shallot, is a botanical species in its own right, contrary to what many people claim it is neither a garlic nor an onion, nor a cross between the yellow onion and garlic. Cultivated in the lands of Piacenza, it is vulgarly called shallot, a bulbous plant that belongs to the Liliaceae family.
The food stands are protagonists of the event and offer shallots declined in recipes for first and second courses: shallot tortelli, shallot risotto or all'isolana, mariola(salami) with mashed potato and sweet and sour shallots, shallot guancialino with polenta, gorgonzola with shallot polenta.
Alongside the activity of the stands, the surrounding restaurants offer a gastronomic review dedicated to the vegetable.
As in every village festival, there is no shortage of a dance floor and groups entertaining visitors.
