Castello di Canossa was probably founded in the mid-10th century by Adalberto Atto, who initiated a skillful policy of acquisitions, exchanges and conquests that would lead his great-granddaughter Matilda to rule over a territory stretching from the Veronese to upper Lazio, from the Tyrrhenian to the Adriatic.
Little remains of that first ancient complex: the imposing ruins that can be seen today on the cliff are mostly related to the late Middle Ages and subsequent centuries.
his is due to multiple factors such as the natural degradation of the structures due to time and abandonment, the collapse of part of the slopes of the rocky massif, but also to damage sustained during at least two sieges. The famous historic meeting in January 1077 has made the name of Canossa known all over the world.
The Association proposes guided tours, in costume animated tours, didactic labs, exhibitions, cultural events in every time of the year.
