Walk among the scents and colours of autumn, returning to the heart of the Truffle Fair
Date: 12 October 2025, 9:30 a.m.
Location: Calestano PR
Excursion in collaboration with Pro Loco di Calestano on the occasion of the National Black Truffle Fair of Fragno
For this excursion, we will depart directly from Calestano, the heart of the Truffle Fair on its opening day, without the need for further travel by car. Through the Rio Moneglia valley, we will walk south-east through a beautiful hillside forest of oaks, manna ashes and hornbeams. After crossing a few fields, we will climb up to the village of Ciano, from where we will quickly reach the Iano cave, which could be described as the smallest cave in the world, or the largest single-seat cave in the world. It is one of the most obvious karst phenomena in the area; although a landslide has partially destroyed other cavities in recent years, it remains a unique area with its travertine deposits, known since the 18th century. After trying to spot the dormouse that is traditionally its guardian, we will set off again and, passing by the beautiful oratory of Iano, we will descend towards Calestano just in time to have something to eat together at the fair.
Minimum number of participants: 6.
Meeting point: 9.30 am in Calestano, Pro Loco office (at the entrance to Via Mazzini, near the Mantovani and Fontana bars, for coffee).
Excursion lasting approximately 3 hours, with a 300-metre elevation gain, mostly on wide cart tracks and grassy areas, which may be muddy.
Participation fee: £7.
Winter hiking clothing and boots with treaded soles are required.
At the end of the hike, you can taste Val Baganza truffle specialities at the Fragno National Black Truffle Fair in Calestano.
